Today elected officials and community representatives joined staff from the Mount Sinai Selikoff Centers for Occupational Health to formally open a new clinical center in Monroe, New York. As members of the New York State Department of Health's Occupational Health Clinic Network, the Selikoff Centers are the designated providers for the Lower Hudson Valley and New York City workforces, and leaders in the prevention and treatment of work-related injuries and illnesses.

Advanced Cell Technology, Inc. announced today that it is positioned to obtain significant patents relating to cellular reprogramming and the generation of induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells. iPS cells are similar to embryonic stem (ES) cells, except they are generated from adult cells such as skin using certain reprogramming factors, without the controversial use of embryos. Although human iPS cells were first produced in 2007, ACT has been working on inducing pluripotency, with positive results, for more than a decade. The Company's efforts go back to the 1990s, providing (through existing patent filings and continuations) some of the earliest priority dates in the field.
In an article published in the Sept. 15 edition of the Journal of the American Medical Association, (JAMA), author Edward H. Shortliffe, MD, PhD, points out that although information underlies all clinical work, and despite the growing role that information management and access play in healthcare delivery and clinical support, there is a dearth of informatics competency being developed in America's future corps of physicians.
