IRIN examines efforts to tackle malnutrition amid increased food insecurity in Chad. "Like in the rest of the Sahel region, a mix of drought, poor rains and harvests as well as rising food prices have resulted in food insecurity and subsequent malnutrition," the news service writes, noting, "Chad's 'embryonic' economy is among factors limiting the local diversity of food sources and income, notes USAID's Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET), adding that sociocultural care practices and poor health systems are also to blame."
The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a member of the herpes family that targets lymphocytes and epithelial cells. While the infection is usually benign, it can in some cases lead to acute infectious mononucleosis and can impair the immune system. EBV is also linked to several malignancies. In a new study, Kriston Ganguli of Massachusetts General Hospital for Children and Harvard Medical School and her colleagues have discovered another advantage to these friendly microscopic tenants: Chemicals secreted by good bacteria that typically live in the intestines of babies could reduce the frequency and severity of a common and often-lethal disease of premature infants.
