Actavis seeks FDA ANDA approval for generic Zubsolv, confirms patent challenge

Actavis plc today confirmed that it has filed an Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) seeking approval to market Buprenorphine Hydrochloride and Naloxone Hydrochloride Dihydrate Sublingual Tablets, Eq, 1.4 mg/0.36 mg and 5.7 mg/1.4 mg Base. Actavis' ANDA product is a generic version of Orexo's Zubsolv, which is a partial opioid agonist indicated for the maintenance treatment of opioid dependence.

New Penn study examines differences in costs of end-of-life care among developed countries

Despite widespread perception, the United States does not provide the worst end-of-life care in the world. In the first international comparison of end-of-life care practices, researchers from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and colleagues from seven countries found that the United States actually has the lowest proportion of deaths in the hospital and the lowest number of days in the hospital in the last six months of life among the those countries, according to a new study published today in JAMA.

Anesthesiology: An anesthesiologist is trained to provide pain relief and maintenance, or restoration, of a stable condition during and immediately following an operation or an obstetric or diagnostic procedure. The anesthesiologist assesses the risk of the patient undergoing surgery and optimizes the patient's condition prior to, during and after surgery. In addition to these management responsibilities, the anesthesiologist provides medical management and consultation in pain management and critical care medicine. Anesthesiologists diagnose and treat acute, long-standing and cancer pain problems; diagnose and treat patients with critical illnesses or severe injuries; direct resuscitation in the care of patients with cardiac or respiratory emergencies, including the need for artificial ventilation; and supervise post-anesthesia recovery.
