Weight and mortality relationship appears to be stronger in adults without diabetes

Researchers ask diabetes status be taken into account in population studies that link weight and mortality. The relationship between body mass index (BMI) appears to be stronger in adults without diabetes than those with existing diabetes. These findingsĀ¹ are published in the Journal of General Internal MedicineĀ² in a study by Chandra Jackson of the Harvard School of Public Health and colleagues.

Veterans wait as long as 50 days for mental health services

An internal investigation by the Department of Veterans Affairs concluded that almost half of veterans who seek mental health care face waiting times in excess of those generally cited by the department.

41st Annual Meeting on Women's Cancer to be hosted in San Francisco, California

The Society of Gynecologic Oncologists (SGO) will host its 41st Annual Meeting on Women's Cancer March 14-17, 2010 at the Moscone West Convention Center in San Francisco, California. This year's meeting will feature more than 434 scientific presentations in addition to lectures, workshops, symposia and postgraduate courses that focus on emerging science, clinical trials and treatment advances for physicians and health care professionals in the field of gynecologic oncology.

LifeBridge Health has begun an electronic exchange of health information between its two hospitals, Sinai Hospital of Baltimore and Northwest Hospital, and Saint Agnes Hospital, a community hospital with an overlapping service area.

Anesthesiology: An anesthesiologist is trained to provide pain relief and maintenance, or restoration, of a stable condition during and immediately following an operation or an obstetric or diagnostic procedure. The anesthesiologist assesses the risk of the patient undergoing surgery and optimizes the patient's condition prior to, during and after surgery. In addition to these management responsibilities, the anesthesiologist provides medical management and consultation in pain management and critical care medicine. Anesthesiologists diagnose and treat acute, long-standing and cancer pain problems; diagnose and treat patients with critical illnesses or severe injuries; direct resuscitation in the care of patients with cardiac or respiratory emergencies, including the need for artificial ventilation; and supervise post-anesthesia recovery.
