SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater and rivers

A new study published on the preprint server medRxiv in May 2020 shows that while the virus causing COVID-19 may be present in wastewater and rivers, the biological agent is typically devoid of vitality and unable to cause active infection. This should provide some relief to public health authorities in their quest to contain the virus.

Wolbachia infection invades Aedes aegypti mosquito, blocks dengue transmission

Strains of a bacterium commonly found in fruit flies can prevent the Aedes aegypti mosquito from transmitting the virus that causes dengue fever, researchers have found.

Recipients of the Bitplane Attendance Awards announced

Bitplane, an Oxford Instruments Company and the world leader in 2 to 4D image visualisation, analysis and interpretation, today announced the three recipients of the Bitplane Attendance Awards. The prize covers the registration fees for the 2014 IEEE Symposium on Biomedical Imaging in Beijing, with the recipients being recognised during the challenge workshop on April 30th. The winners have been selected by the organizers of the 2nd Cell Tracking Challenge from among the participating scientists, and were chosen due to the high quality of their submitted results.

NIH grant for Mount Sinai to study use of inhaled corticosteroids for treatment of sickle cell disease

The Departments of Emergency Medicine and Hematology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai have been awarded a $4 million grant from the National Institutes of Health toward further study of inhaled corticosteroids to treat sickle cell disease in individuals who do not have asthma.
