A University of Missouri-Rolla researcher's investigation into how proteins adhere to surfaces may lead the elimination of surface-induced thrombus formation, a phenomenon known to cause blood clots in artificial arteries, valves and veins.
A case report titled, "Acute Solar Retinopathy Imaged With Adaptive Optics, Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography, and En Face Optical Coherence Tomography", appeared in the journal JAMA Ophthalmology, where the authors describe the damage caused by the sun's rays to the eyes of a woman who viewed the recent solar eclipse without adequate eye protection. This type of eye damage is termed acute solar retinopathy.
A new study from researchers in Italy has found that a split-dosage schedule of bowel (colon) preparation is the most effective method for bowel cleansing before colonoscopy. Colonoscopies performed within six to eight hours of the end of preparation were associated with significantly better cleansing than those performed more than eight hours after the end of preparation. Two different types of bowel cleansing products were also assessed and researchers found that low-volume polyethylene glycol (PEG) plus ascorbic acid was as effective as high-volume PEG-electrolyte solution, but has superior palatability (or taste). This is the first study to demonstrate that the advantage of split-dosage intake is also true for low-volume bowel cleansing solutions.
On October 1, changes were made to the federal WIC program that provides nutritional support to low-income women, infants and children. The goal of the new food package is to encourage breastfeeding because mother's milk is best for babies. Mothers who breastfeed will no longer receive any infant formula under the new program. Mothers who choose to formula feed may receive up to 26% fewer infant formula vouchers than were afforded in previous years.
