Ground breaking research could reduce the recurrence of prostate cancer in males, a new study in the journal Nature Communications reports.
Researchers have found that more than half the cases of non-hereditary or sporadic schizophrenia are caused by "new" protein-altering gene mutations. These mutations are new genetic errors that appear in patients but not in either of their parents, the researchers explained in the report published in the Aug. 7 online edition of the journal Nature Genetics.
Research scientist Christine Portfors will study how the brain chemical dopamine influences hearing with support from the National Institutes of Health. The work may ultimately lead to better therapies for people with hearing loss and communication problems.
