A study aiming to develop a new therapeutic technique could bring a revolution in our approach to treating rare, fatal Sanfilippo syndrome, a disorder that affects children as young as 2 years old and leads to childhood dementia and premature death.
New York University College of Nursing researcher and Assistant Professor Abraham A. Brody, RN, PhD, GNP-BC and colleagues reporting in Journal of Palliative Medicine found that initiating a palliative care consult in the emergency department reduced hospital length of stay when compared to patients who receive the palliative care consult after admission.
"The State Department will have to stop humanitarian aid to millions of people, cut foreign assistance to Israel, and delay efforts to ramp up diplomatic security abroad after the Sept. 11 attack in Benghazi if [budget] sequestration goes into effect next month, according to Secretary of State John Kerry," Foreign Policy's "The Cable" blog reports.
Inter Press Service examines the relationship between child marriage and the health of women and girls in Afghanistan. "In Afghanistan, the maternal mortality rate is on the rise; hospitals are filling up with anemic women and girls; and in over 200 districts, high schools are devoid of even a single female pupil," the news service writes, adding, "These issues are not unrelated - they are all products of a grave social problem in this country of 35 million people: early child marriages."
The Society for Research in Child Development will hold its Biennial Meeting in Philadelphia at the Pennsylvania Convention Center March 19 - 21, 2015. This meeting brings together thousands of child development experts from around the world to present about the latest interdisciplinary research.
