New research has shown that there could be a protective role for copper in Alzheimer's disease.
A new study covering several institutions shows that patients recovering from surgery in the US or Canada have a 50% chance of being treated with opioids. This is seven times as high as the corresponding percentage in Sweden. Within the US, the initial dosages are likely to be over 200 morphine milligram equivalents (MME) – much more than in Canada.
A renewed focus on primary healthcare in South Africa is expected to give momentum to telemedicine programmes, as the Government rolls out the National Health Insurance (NHI) scheme. Uptake of telemedicine solutions, throughout the continent, is on the rise due to infrastructural developments and the need to extend services to under-served rural areas.
The Krieger Eye Institute at Sinai Hospital opened a new center for the treatment of retinal diseases in November. The retina is the layer of tissue at the back of the eye that converts images to electrical impulses. These electrical signals are then perceived by the brain as sight.
