Scientists investigating a 'biochemical switch' linked to strokes and heart disease claim to have made an advance in understanding how it is 'turned on'.
Patients with acute coronary syndrome undergoing angioplasty who received the anticoagulant drug bivalirudin did not show significant improvements in either of two co-primary endpoints-a composite of rate of death, heart attack or stroke at 30 days, or a composite of those events plus major bleeding-as compared to patients receiving standard anticoagulation therapy, according to a study presented at the American College of Cardiology's 64th Annual Scientific Session.
While breakthrough treatments have emerged for several cancers over the last two decades, driving striking improvements in survival and other clinical outcomes, too little is known about the risk of therapy-related hematologic cancers following targeted and immunotherapeutic approaches.
For many patients with advanced blood cancers, a stem-cell transplant can drive the disease into remission. However, about one-third of these patients experience a relapse and face a very poor prognosis.
There are around 12,500 staff and associate specialist (SAS) doctors in the NHS in the UK. They are distinct from junior doctors and consultants.* The BMA survey of over 2500 SAS doctors reveals that those on full-time contracts work on average 73 hours a week, far in excess of the European Working Time Directive limit of 48 hours.
