The body has a set of DNA repair enzymes that clean up damage to the genome, to reduce potential problems. Many commonly used cancer chemotherapies work by alkylating DNA. However, the DNA repair enzymes are just as capable of repairing this alkylation as if it were damage from any other source, and so they act to overcome the effects of the therapy, reducing its effectiveness.
Kaiser Health News staff writer Jay Hancock, working in collaboration with Politico, reports: "If quiet negotiations between policymakers and industry bear fruit, Maryland could join the short list of states attempting to go far beyond the Affordable Care Act in improving health and limiting spending."
A new study has found certain genes that predispose a person to develop insomnia or sleep problems. This was one of the largest genome wide studies undertaken on insomnia. The study led by psychiatrist Murray Stein from the University of California San Diego was published in the latest issue of the journal Molecular Psychiatry.
BioScrip, Inc. today announced 2015 second quarter financial results. Second quarter revenue from continuing operations was $262.4 million and the net loss from continuing operations was $243.2 million, or $3.60 loss per diluted share, which includes a $238.0 million pre-tax goodwill impairment charge resulting from a decline in the Company's common stock price and related market capitalization, as well as an $8.6 million incremental pre-tax bad debt charge predominately attributable to aged accounts receivable balances over 365 days old.
