Hospital emergency departments play a growing role in the U.S. health care system, accounting for a rising proportion of hospital admissions and serving increasingly as an advanced diagnostic center for primary care physicians, according to a new RAND Corporation study.
Traditionally, frailty is thought to be a syndrome of the elderly - one which comes as a natural and inevitable side-effect of aging, gradually transforming strong, healthy bodies into weaker, more delicate frames over time.
It currently affects over 1 million people in Africa, Asia, South America, and the Pacific; and WHO estimates that between 2 and 3 million individuals are permanently disabled as a result of it. Although all the registered cases are on treatment, it is estimated that during the period 2000–2005, about 2.5 million people affected by leprosy need to be detected and treated.
