The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health, has awarded approximately $208 million to two programs that support research to better understand the human immune response to emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, including those that may be introduced into a community through acts of bioterrorism.
Xhale, Inc. has been awarded a $1.7 million Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase II grant by the NIH National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) to continue the development of SMART (Self Monitoring and Reporting Therapeutics), a breath-based medication adherence system for HIV/AIDS therapies.
A research study by orthopedic spine, back and neck surgeon at Rush University Medical Center Dr. Howard An and colleagues found that patients who underwent surgery for spinal stenosis showed significantly more improvement in all primary outcomes than did patients who were treated nonsurgically.
With chronic diseases on the rise in children, pediatricians are looking for solutions to improve care and outcomes for these often complex illnesses. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) today announced a new initiative funded with a grant from the Merck Childhood Asthma Network, Inc. (MCAN) that will allow pediatricians across the country to pilot a series of quality improvement programs to effectively address the top chronic disease affecting kids - childhood asthma.
