According to latest NHS figures number of prescriptions dispensed has soared by 70 per cent over the last decade. Every man, woman and child in the country received on average 17.8 prescription items in 2010. The vast majority went to those aged over 60, who received 42.4 items each in 2007.
Misuse of prescription pain medications remains a major public health problem - but programs to prevent it may be underused, according to a study in the July issue of the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs.
Retinal venular calibre may predict visual outcome in diabetic macular oedema patients given the anti-vascular endothelial growth factor monoclonal antibody ranibizumab, a pilot study suggests.
A type of adult stem cell is now proving itself more versatile for research and therapies thanks to revolutionary 3D experiments.
