The urgent need to evaluate nature's repository of chemicals in plants, microbes, and marine organisms for their potential value in health care will be a major theme of a five-day scientific conference in New York that is expected to draw some 1,200 natural products researchers from around the world.
A new technique that identifies how genes are controlled could help scientists spot errors in the genetic code which trigger disease, a study suggests.
Schonfeld, a University of Illinois at Chicago professor of electrical and computer engineering, is studying gene expression and interactions in ways that are analogous to the workings of electrical or computer networks. He is project director and principal investigator of a four-year, $1.2 million National Institutes of Health grant.
"We are on the threshold of legislation that's nearly a century in the making, finally recognizing health care as a right and not a privilege, reducing costs and ensuring that all Americans can get and keep their coverage - even if they don't have perfect health. This is a tremendous step forward for Hispanic Americans in particular, since 1 in 3 Hispanics are uninsured. While there are many critical issues of importance to the Puerto Rican community yet to be resolved, Senate passage is needed to move the process forward, so we can remedy these issues in Conference.
Hamilton's role as one of the world's leading centres in cardiac, vascular and stroke research was amplified today with the grand opening of the David Braley Cardiac, Vascular and Stroke Research Institute at the Hamilton General Hospital site of Hamilton Health Sciences.
