Transplanted bone marrow stem cells in patients with type 2 diabetes reduce insulin use

A study carried out in India examining the safety and efficacy of self-donated (autologous), transplanted bone marrow stem cells in patients with type 2 diabetes (TD2M), has found that patients receiving the transplants, when compared to a control group of TD2M patients who did not receive transplantation, required less insulin post-transplantation.

Estimates may overstate toll of sudden cardiac death

Researchers trying to get a precise picture of sudden cardiac death in Portland, Ore. found that checking with ambulance services, medical examiners and hospitals revealed the actual number of cases was only about one-third the total estimated by a commonly used method that involves reviews of death certificates, according to a new study in the Sept. 15, 2004 issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

North Shore-LIJ Health System granted approval to extend cardiac surgery program to Southside Hospital

The New York State Hospital Review and Planning Council today approved North Shore-LIJ Health System's request to extend its open-heart surgery program to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, bringing one of New York's most renowned cardiothoracic surgery programs to Suffolk County's south shore. The council's action will be forwarded to State Health Commissioner Richard Daines, MD, for final approval.
