The Alcon Independent Director Committee (the "Committee") of Alcon, Inc. today announced that RiskMetrics Group, Inc., a global leader in risk management, corporate governance and financial research and analysis, has raised concerns about the adequacy of the merger proposal by Novartis AG ("Novartis") to Alcon's minority shareholders and the legality of any attempt by Novartis to unilaterally impose a full takeover of Alcon.
The Medical Research Council (MRC) and the Institute of Child Health (ICH) at UCL (University College London) have announced a partnership to establish a centre for research to improve the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting children's health, and to promote their health and well-being.
A recent study from Boston University School of Medicine and Boston Medical Center shows a significant decrease in severe sepsis mortality rates over the past 20 years. Looking at data from patients with severe sepsis enrolled in clinical trials, researchers found that in-hospital mortality rates decreased from 47 percent between 1991 and 1995 to 29 percent between 2006 and 2009, a time period when no new pharmacological treatments were developed for severe sepsis.
Why do certain Alzheimer medications work in animal models but not in clinical trials in humans? A research team from the University of Bonn and the biomedical enterprise LIFE & BRAIN GmbH has been able to show that results of established test methods with animal models and cell lines used up until now can hardly be translated to the processes in the human brain.
