Scientists at the Wayne State University School of Medicine's Center for Molecular Medicine and Genetics have shown for the first time the extent by which interactions between environmental exposures and genetic variation across individuals have a significant impact on human traits and diseases like diabetes, heart disease and obesity, strengthening the case for precision medicine initiatives.
An international team of researchers has revealed the genetic secrets of one of the world's most debilitating human parasites, Brugia malayi (B. malayi), which the World Health Organization estimates has seriously incapacitated and disfigured more than 40 million people around the globe.
Sagent Pharmaceuticals, a privately held specialty pharmaceutical company, announced today that it has raised $40 million through two tranches of a strategic Series B financing. In this round, a $10 million investment was made by Zhejiang Hisun Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd. (Hisun), and the remaining $30 million was contributed by an unnamed China-focused private equity investment fund. To date, including this financing, Sagent has raised $153 million in equity capital.
Scientists from the University of California-Davis recently developed a mathematical model of the rate of gene transfer among bacteria in the environment.
Obama administration officials asked a judge to dismiss Virginia's lawsuit challenging the new health reform law because the state does not have standing to sue over the requirement that individuals will be required to buy health insurance, The Washington Post reports. "Federal attorneys argued that individuals, not the state, are affected by the requirement. … Further, they wrote that the mandate causes no injury to the state and will not take effect until 2014, making the legal challenge not yet timely."
