The presence of a specific finding on otoscopy known as the spoke sign may help in the detection of middle ear effusion in pediatric patients, although its incorporation into clinical practice may require focused training, say US scientists.
A test using a patient's breath could be developed to detect lung, breast, bowel and prostate cancers, a team of scientists have discovered. While these results are only preliminary, the study1 published in the British Journal of Cancer today (Wednesday), found that sensors could distinguish between the breath of healthy patients and those who have cancer.
In patients with epilepsy, normal neurological activity becomes disrupted, causing debilitating seizures.
Infectious diseases such as malaria and syphilis can be diagnosed rapidly and reliably in the field by using a simple test developed by Canadian scientists. The test is based on the use of DNAzymes and gold nanoparticles. As the researchers report in the journal Angewandte Chemie, their test allows for the sensitive detection of bacteria, viruses, and parasites.
McKesson Corporation today reported that revenues for the third quarter ended December 31, 2011 were up 9% to $30.8 billion compared to $28.2 billion a year ago. On the basis of U.S. generally accepted accounting principles, third-quarter earnings per diluted share was $1.20 compared to $0.60 a year ago.
