Speaking Wednesday at a seminar titled "Campaign Against Counterfeit Medicines," Mauritian Health and Quality of Life Minister Lormus Bundhoo "cautioned against the dangers posed by counterfeit drugs and their impact on human life" and "said that the authorities are determined to raise awareness on the dangers of the manufacture of and trade in counterfeit medicines, and the importance of combating counterfeit medicines in Mauritius," PANA/Afriquejet reports.
Researchers from the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth have found that epigenetic changes to DNA are associated with aging in disease-free breast tissues and are further altered in breast tumors. Epigenetic changes describe heritable alterations caused by mechanisms other than by changes in DNA sequence. The discovery, published in the February 2014 issue of Epigenetics, illustrates how cancer and aging are tightly interconnected processes by identifying epigenetic alterations present in the normal aging breast that may increase disease risk in cancer-free individuals.
Previous studies have hypothesized that low levels of the enzyme thymidylate synthase (TS) likely mark patients who will benefit from the drug pemetrexed - but results have been inconclusive at best and at times contradictory. A University of Colorado Cancer Center study recently published in the Journal of Thoracic Oncology provides an explanation why: only in combination with high levels of a second enzyme, FPGS, does low TS predict response to pemetrexed in patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma.
KYTHERA Biopharmaceuticals, Inc. and Intendis, Bayer HealthCare's dermatology business, today announced the initiation of two European Phase III studies evaluating ATX-101, a first-in-class injectable adipolytic agent, for the reduction of localized fat under the chin (submental fat).
NovaSterilis Inc. a leader in the development and commercialization of supercritical carbon dioxide (SCCO2) technology in collaboration with CC Chu Ph.D (Cornell) reports successful findings from research funded by a National Institutes of Health (NIH) phase l grant. These results meet the study goal to sterilize absorbable sutures to a sterility assurance level 10-6 (SAL6) without chemical or mechanical degradation. NovaSterilis intends to apply for phase II funding to develop the process ready for commercial application.
