Does Parkinson's disease start in the brain or the gut? In a new contribution published in the Journal of Parkinson's Disease, scientists hypothesize that PD can be divided into two subtypes: gut-first, originating in the peripheral nervous system of the gut and spreading to the brain; and brain-first, originating in the brain, or entering the brain via the olfactory system, and spreading to the brainstem and peripheral nervous system.
Numerate, Inc. and Intellikine, Inc. today announced the successful conclusion of their research collaboration to discover novel small molecule compounds targeting the PI3K/mTOR signaling pathway. The collaboration combined Intellikine's unique capabilities in x-ray crystal structure-guided medicinal chemistry and drug discovery with Numerate's powerful computational drug design platform to identify potent, selective and drug-like inhibitors of PI3 kinase alpha, an important target in cancer therapy.
In the first of a series titled "Imagine a world...," posted on the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's "Impatient Optimists" blog, Paula Franklin, U.K. medical director for Marie Stopes International, writes, "For the most part, only people who really need or want something care much about it being available, and that's why it can be hard to make people in the developed world tune in to the huge unmet need for contraception globally - 222 million people who want to use contraception can't get it, at the last count."
A new nationwide research initiative has been launched to define changes in the human immune system's response to infection and vaccination using human rather than animal models, which could lead to better vaccines and other treatments. Baylor Research Institute (BRI), along with five other U.S.-based Human Immune Phenotyping Centers, will receive a total of $100 million over five years to conduct the research.
