Scientists at A*STAR's Institute of Medical Biology and Institute of Molecular and Cellular Biology have identified a gene encoding a hormone that could potentially be used as a therapeutic molecule to treat heart diseases. The hormone - which they have chosen to name ELABELA - is only 32 amino-acids long, making it amongst the tiniest proteins made by the human body.
A Welsh donor has already given a massive £650,000 and Teenage Cancer Trust has pledged £650,000 from its central funds. On Monday 24th May, Teenage Cancer Trust will launch its fundraising campaign for the Unit at St David's Hotel, Cardiff Bay. The charity is looking to raise a minimum of £500,000 to reach their target.
Half of all parents (46 per cent) on a low income have gone short of food over the last year to feed someone else in their family, reveals a survey by leading children's charity NCH.
The profession must take advantage of changes in medical education to ensure that all health professionals, but especially gut specialists, are given adequate training in nutrition, urge Dr Penny Nield and colleagues, in the launch issue of Frontline Gastroenterology, the new quarterly companion journal to Gut.
