Despite the fact that bowel cancer is the third most common form of the disease in Britain and kills 16,000 people every year, the government watchdog on drugs the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) has sparked a bitter controversy by refusing to provide two bowel cancer drugs on the National Health Service (NHS) to cancer patients.
Idera Pharmaceuticals today announced presentation of data from its randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled Phase 2 trial that showed improvements from baseline of up to 90% in Psoriasis Area Severity Index scores in patients with moderate to severe plaque psoriasis following four weeks of treatment with the Toll-like Receptor antagonist IMO-3100.
That's the conclusion drawn by two Rice University scientists who have designed a computer simulation to test the idea that evolvability — the likelihood of genetic mutation — is a trait that can itself be favored or disfavored through the process of natural selection.
