Unpasteurized milk — often referred to as raw milk — is at the center of a rally and court appearance today in Viroqua, Wisconsin. The controversial product can contain bacteria, like E. coli, Salmonella and Campylobacter, which can severely sicken those who consume it — bacteria removed by the pasteurization process.
The UNC Health Care system in North Carolina on Tuesday announced plans to begin new efforts to inform low-income patients about financial assistance through a revised telephone message, signs and a financial aid hotline, the Raleigh News & Observer reports (Stancill, Raleigh News & Observer, 8/30).
Years of debating liberal friends and colleagues has brought me to an understanding: This question is at the core of the debate. The absurd notion of a "right" to health care underlies the movement towards socialized medicine. If this right does exist, it becomes a moral imperative to guarantee it for all, i.e. "universal coverage."
Sepsis, a form of systemic inflammation, is the leading cause of death in critically ill patients. Sepsis is linked with massive cell death; however, the specific mechanisms involved in the lethality of sepsis are unclear. Now, a new study published by Cell Press in the December 23rd issue of the journal Immunity finds that inhibition of a specific cell death pathway called "necroptosis" protected mice from lethal inflammation.
A commonly prescribed drug used to treat gout may also offer some protection against colorectal cancer, according to a new study from researchers at the University of Michigan and in Israel.
