The Ontario government should fully fund the $8 million deficit of the Cornwall Community Hospital, hospital staff will request today, as they rally at lunchtime at the McConnell site. The rally is organized by CUPE Local 7811, which represents 600 nurses, clerical, maintenance, cleaning, dietary and support staff at the Cornwall Community Hospital.
Quinine should no longer be the drug of choice for treating severe malaria, according to an updated systematic review by Cochrane researchers. It is now evident that the antimalarial drug artesunate, which is derived from herbs used in Chinese medicine, is more effective at preventing death in patients with severe malaria.
ArthroCare Corp., a leader in developing state-of-the-art, minimally invasive surgical products, announced today that it has received clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its Spartan PEEK Suture Implant system (Spartan™). Spartan is a preloaded PEEK threaded anchor indicated for use in fixation of soft tissue to bone, such as during a rotator cuff repair.
The California State Auditor released an audit today of California's Every Woman Counts (EWC) program that suggests the state's ability to adequately provide breast cancer screening for its neediest women is threatened by budget cuts and poor fiscal management, according to the seven California Affiliates of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, the global leader of the breast cancer movement.
Officials from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), the Ad Council and the Stay Strong Foundation will unveil a national public service campaign designed to raise awareness of mental health problems among young adults in the African American community. The event is part of Black History Month and it is being held to coincide with the first annual Historically Black Colleges and Universities National Mental Health Awareness Day. The launch will be telecast to colleges and universities nationwide.
