Trust for America's Health commends today's announcement by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services of Communities Putting Prevention to Work grantee recipients. The landmark $327 million initiative will provide funding for a comprehensive, coordinated approach to community-based prevention activities that address physical activity, nutrition, obesity, and tobacco use.
"The United Nations' World Food Program [WFP] is appealing for $87 million to avert starvation in Zimbabwe's rural areas where close to two million people need food aid," VOA News reports, adding, "The U.N. agency says because of poor rainfall, this year's hunger season in Zimbabwe has started earlier than in the past."
The American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) has recognized 10 endoscopy units as part of its program specifically dedicated to promoting quality in endoscopy, in all settings where it is practiced in the United States. The ASGE Endoscopy Unit Recognition Program honors endoscopy units that follow the ASGE guidelines on privileging, quality assurance, endoscopy reprocessing and CDC infection control guidelines. To date, 134 endoscopy units have been recognized by ASGE.
Research published this week in the New England Journal of Medicine. A multinational team of scientists led by the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and the University of Liverpool has identified a gene that could indicate if epilepsy patients starting a common drug treatment are likely to experience side-effects ranging from a mild skin irritation to the potentially fatal Steven-Johnson Syndrome.
