Paper strips laced with sugar could be the sweetest solution so far, literally, to kill E. coli in contaminated water.
Health care costs continue to go up, and physicians control more than 80 percent of those costs. Could providing physicians with real-time information about the cost of what they order help to restrain excessive testing? This is the question addressed in an article- in the Journal of General Internal Medicine-, published by Springer. The research project was led by Daniel Horn of the Massachusetts General Hospital's Division of General Medicine in the US, and is among the first to focus on the impact that the passive display of real-time laboratory costs can have within a primary care, non-academic setting.
To date, examining patient tissue samples has meant cutting them into thin slices for histological analysis. This might now be set to change - thanks to a new staining method devised by an interdisciplinary team from the Technical University of Munich.
Researchers at Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Albany Medical College, along with corporate partners GE Global Research and Acoustic MedSystems Inc., have received a five-year, $3.5 million award from the National Institutes of Health through the National Cancer Institutes' Academic-Industrial Partnership program, to continue development of an innovative robotic system that, operating within an MRI scanner, can deliver a minimally invasive probe into the brain to destroy metastatic brain tumors with high-intensity therapeutic ultrasound under real-time guidance.
NeoTract, a wholly owned subsidiary of Teleflex Incorporated focused on addressing unmet needs in the field of urology, today announced the results of an independent analysis measuring costs and patient outcomes of the UroLift System compared to transurethral resection of the prostate.
