ICON Central Laboratories - a division of ICON plc,, a global provider of outsourced development services to the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical device industries - today announced the opening of a new laboratory facility in Tianjin, China, in partnership with Fountain Medical Development Ltd (FMD). It is the third ICON laboratory in the Asia-Pacific region.
The World Health Organisation estimates that every year 600,000 deaths are caused by passive smoking worldwide and, in Austria alone, two or three people a day die as a result of passive smoking.
Noting "the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently announced that it has approved a new treatment for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (TB) that can be used as an alternative when other drugs fail," Kim Lufkin, communications officer at the Global Health Technologies Coalition (GHTC), writes in the coalition's "Breakthroughs" blog, "There is a pressing and urgent need for even more new TB drugs, which makes this new FDA approval so significant."
On Aug. 8, Massachusetts' third health care cost control bill became law. It "sets annual state spending targets, encourages the formation of accountable care organizations, and establishes an independent commission to oversee health care system performance."
