One of the most common types of brain tumors in adults, glioblastoma multiforme, is one of the most devastating. Even with recent advances in surgery, radiation and chemotherapy, the aggressive and invasive tumors become resistant to treatment, and median survival of patients is only about 15 months. In a study published in Neuro-Oncology, researchers at Mayo Clinic identify an important association between the naturally occurring enzyme Kallikrein 6, also known as KLK6, and the malignant tumors.
As winter brings freezing temperatures and blankets regions of the U.S. with snow, dialysis patients are especially vulnerable because they typically need treatment every two to three days, and any substantial delay can be life threatening. Power outages can disrupt their regular treatments, and snow and ice can make driving treacherous, preventing patients from getting treatment at dialysis facilities.
Nonprofit Finance Fund has been awarded $1 million from Trinity Health in Novi, Michigan, to improve the access to capital for Michigan nonprofits. NFF will use this investment to provide loans to nonprofit organizations in southeast Michigan, the home of seven of Trinity's 47 hospitals. The funds will be used to finance community facilities projects and organizations working in low-wealth communities, providing working capital for construction of buildings, facilities improvements, and equipment purchases.
An appetite-suppressing chemical also improves glucose tolerance and lowers insulin levels in obese and diabetic mice, researchers report in the November issue of Cell Metabolism, a publication of Cell Press.
HemaCare Corporation announced today that it has reached a definitive agreement to sell certain assets of its Blood Services operations to the American Red Cross. Under the terms of the sale, which closed today, HemaCare sold its red blood cell collection operation assets to the American Red Cross. The sale does not include HemaCare's platelet collection business.
