A team led by scientists at the UNC School of Medicine discovered an important vulnerability of the AIDS-causing retrovirus HIV, and has shown in preclinical experiments that a widely used diabetes drug, metformin, seems able to exploit this vulnerability.
Osteoporosis is a disease categorized by brittle bones and increased risk of fracture. Individuals with osteoporosis, and diseases like it, have access to a number of treatments but no permanent solution.
Researchers have found another reason to eat well: a healthy diet helps prevent kidney stones. Loading up on fruits, vegetables, nuts, low-fat dairy products, and whole grains, while limiting salt, red and processed meats, and sweetened beverages is an effective way to ward off kidney stones, according to a study appearing in an upcoming issue of the Journal of the American Society Nephrology (JASN).
Vindictiveness doesn't pay. This has been demonstrated by a current study at Bonn and Maastricht Universities.
