A team of researchers says it has solved the longstanding puzzle of why a key protein linked to learning is also needed to become addicted to cocaine. Results of the study, published in the Aug. 1 issue of the journal Cell, describe how the learning-related protein works with other proteins to forge new pathways in the brain in response to a drug-induced rush of the "pleasure" molecule dopamine.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), to the dismay of gay-rights activists, is recommending that any man who has had sex with another man in the previous five years be barred from serving as an anonymous sperm donor.
The prevalence of depression, cannabis use, and alcohol abuse increased among former smokers from 2005 to 2016 in the U.S., according to a new study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.
"At the Global Fund [to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria], we launched a new funding model this week that is built to capitalize on open interaction and information flow," Global Fund Executive Director Mark Dybul writes in the Huffington Post's "The Big Push" blog, adding, "With more open dialogue between cooperative partners, we can more effectively confront and ultimately defeat these terrible diseases."
While transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) continues to expand its pool of eligible patients, open heart surgery- resulting in excellent patient survival and fewer strokes when compared to TAVR- is the best option for young and middle-aged adults with aortic valve disease- at least for now, according to a scientific presentation at the 56th Annual Meeting of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons.
