Severely obese patients may experience significant, long-term improvements in blood pressure as they lose substantial amounts of weight after gastric bypass surgery, thereby contributing to their overall health, according to a new University of Pittsburgh study, published in the March issue of the Archives of Surgery.
Medical imaging is a notoriously data intensive field with its volume, variety and speed of data generation multiplying every day. Conventional tools are incapable of efficiently managing such large and complex datasets; posing limits on scalability, sustainability and usability. As the U.S. medical imaging field evolves from being not only data-intensive but also data-driven, big data tools are expected to better handle medical imaging, patient records, and improve workflow efficiency, diagnostic accuracy, treatment decisions and health management.
Anxiety over the Zika virus is growing as the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro approach. To better diagnose and track the disease, scientists are now reporting in ACS' journal Analytical Chemistry a new $2 test that in the lab can accurately detect low levels of the virus in saliva.
Gov. Mark Dayton's plan to expand the state's Medicaid rolls by 95,000 people has been approved by federal authorities, his office said Thursday. The move, which begins March 1, will provide health insurance to 12,000 low-income adults who previously were uninsured, and broader coverage at lower cost to another 83,000 who received care under two state-funded programs, MinnesotaCare and General Assistance Medical Care (2/17).
