Declining biodiversity may be contributing to the rise of asthma, allergies, and other chronic inflammatory diseases among people living in cities worldwide, a Finnish study suggests. Emerging evidence indicates that commensal microbes inhabiting the skin, airway, and gut protect against inflammatory disorders. However, little is known about the environmental determinants of the microbiome.
Obesity and the painful autoimmune disorder rheumatoid arthritis are each becoming more common, raising a logical question: Could one have something to do with the other? For women, it appears there is a link, Mayo Clinic researchers say.
Exclusive breastfeeding appears to have a protective effect against the return of disease activity after pregnancy in women with multiple sclerosis, say researchers.
Despite increased vaccine distribution and a significant decrease in the number of COVID-19 cases in Canada, the future of the pandemic is still a major concern, based on the possibility of a resurgence in the short term as well as long term and an understanding of the future of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) immunity. It is not clear if the Canadian population will reach herd immunity or if there is a risk of future resurgence of the virus in the Fall or Winter.
"First patient in" is the call from the Innsbruck firm, Innovacell Biotechnologie AG, as the first patient was recruited at the MHAT Plovdiv clinic in Bulgaria for the Phase IIb study of the advanced therapy medicinal product, urocell®. The clinical study will be conducted, beside Bulgaria, in the Czech Republic, Germany, Poland and Romania at more than 50 clinics.
