Moderate levels of exercise may not be enough to control mild hypertension in men and women over age 55, the age group most at risk of later developing potentially fatal heart failure, a new four-year study reports. The findings by researchers at Johns Hopkins, to be published in the journal Archives of Internal Medicine online April 11, call into question the effectiveness of national guidelines on exercise for lowering blood pressure in older people.
Results from a new multi-year initiative provide further evidence that a school prevention program called Botvin LifeSkills Training (LST) can dramatically cut teen cigarette smoking. After identifying LST as the top-rated prevention program, researchers in Italy translated the LST program into Italian and adapted it for Italian youth.
Positive results announced this week from a large clinical trial testing the efficacy of the RTS,S malaria vaccine are "encouraging," but they are also "a reminder of how much work remains to be done," an Economist editorial reports.
Patients ages 65 and older last year were 69% less likely to die at hundreds of the best hospitals than hundreds of the worst, according to a study conducted by Colorado-based Health Grades, Bloomberg/Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
Research just released by the University of California, Davis and the National Center for Food Safety and Technology, Illinois Institute of Technology demonstrates that people can include potatoes in their diet and still lose weight. This research was presented at the Obesity Society's 28th Annual Scientific Meeting October 8-12, 2010.
