Noting the ongoing 57th session of the U.N. Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) and International Women's Day, recognized today, Ambassador Eric Goosby, U.S. global AIDS coordinator and head of the State Department's Office of Global Health Diplomacy, and UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé write in the Huffington Post's "Global Motherhood" blog.
In 2017, the majority (58%) of the almost 27 000 newly reported hepatitis B cases in the European Union and European Economic Area were classified as chronic infections. This follows a consistent upward trend in reported chronic hepatitis B cases since 2008.
Genetic information that determines hair color or whether an individual might develop a particular cancer is passed from one generation to the next through DNA. Genes encoded in the DNA contain information, but a process called methylation is one factor that often controls how that information is expressed.
Discussing and documenting patients' preferences for care at the end of life does not cause them any harm, contrary to recent claims. A new study published today in the Journal of Hospital Medicine found that patients who talk with their physicians about end-of-life care and have an advance directive in their medical record have similar survival rates as patients who do not have these discussions and documents.
Astellas Pharma Global Development, Inc., a subsidiary of Tokyo-based Astellas Pharma Inc., announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration designated isavuconazole as a Qualified Infectious Disease Product (QIDP) for the treatment of invasive mucormycosis (also known as zygomycosis), a life-threatening invasive fungal infection caused by certain emerging molds.
