University of Limerick researcher, Dr Niall Kelly was recently awarded in the region of €250,000 by the Health Research Board to investigate a condition called Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) which affects 50% of men over the age of 50.
A new study finds that older women who take in substantial amount of trans fats are more likely than their counterparts to suffer an ischemic stroke. However, the risk of stroke associated with trans fat intake was lower among women taking aspirin, according to the findings from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill researchers. The report, "Trans Fat Intake, Aspirin and Ischemic Stroke Among Postmenopausal Women," was published today online in the journal Annals of Neurology.
Feeling happy about life slowed the cognitive decline among older adults in China, a new 12-year study suggests.
Some physicians are prescribing opioids such as OxyContin 55 times as often as others, according to a new study led by St. Michael's Hospital and the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES). The study found most opioid-related deaths occur among patients treated by physicians who frequently prescribe opioids, suggesting doctors who prescribe a lot of opioids may not be doing so safely.
Research into the pathology of vaping-associated lung injury is in its early stages, but a Mayo Clinic study published in The New England Journal of Medicine finds that lung injuries from vaping most likely are caused by direct toxicity or tissue damage from noxious chemical fumes.
