Giving clot-busting drugs to patients who wake up with stroke symptoms appears to be as safe as giving it to those in the recommended three-hour window, according to researchers at The University of Texas Medical School at Houston.
With an estimated 1.6 million people in the U.S. dealing with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), physicians can have a hard time telling which newly diagnosed patients have a high risk of severe inflammation or what therapies will be most effective.
Self-management education programs for people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD) significantly decrease hospital admissions, researchers report in a new systematic review of studies.
"For the third time in the past decade, drought has returned to the arid, western shoulder of Africa, bringing hunger to millions," and "aid agencies are warning that if action is not taken now, the region known as the Sahel could slip into crisis," the Associated Press reports.
Roughly 3 to 5% of children with an aunt or uncle with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can also be expected to have ASD, compared to about 1.5% of children in the general population, according to a study funded by the National Institutes of Health. Researchers also found that a child whose mother has a sibling with ASD is not significantly more likely to be affected by ASD, compared to a child whose father has a sibling with ASD.
