Indiana University School of Medicine researchers have identified a small protein with a big role in lowering plasma glucose and increasing insulin sensitivity.
Milk consumption has been linked to improved health, with decreased risks of diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and colon cancer. A group of scientists in Sweden found that lactoferricin4-14 (Lfcin4-14), a milk protein with known health effects, significantly reduces the growth rate of colon cancer cells over time by prolonging the period of the cell cycle before chromosomes are replicated. In a new study, investigators report that treatment with Lfcin4-14 reduced DNA damage in colon cancer cells exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light.
Increasing evidence supports the importance of small airways in the diagnosis and treatment of asthma; however, focused areas of discussion and critical review of this topic have been lacking. To foster a better understanding of the role of small airways in asthma management, Teva Respiratory, a subsidiary of Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd., will be providing reprints of a special supplement entitled "Small Airway Involvement: A Key to Asthma" from the December issue of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology at their exhibit (Booth #724) at the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Annual Meeting being held Feb. 26-March 2, 2010 in New Orleans, La.
Childhood nephrotic syndrome, which affects 3 out of 100,000 children, is the most common chronic kidney disease in children. Although it does not impair kidney function, it weakens the body's ability to remove water and salt from the blood, and causes swelling in the belly, legs, and around the eyes.
BioTrends is pleased to announce the fielding of a new syndicated report, LaunchTrends®: ACTEMRA. Roche, Inc. announced that they received FDA approval for Actemra (generic name: tocilizumab) on January 8th. This represents the first IL-6 receptor inhibitor agent approved for Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA); Actemra is approved for adult patients with moderately-to-severely active RA who have had an inadequate response to one or more TNF antagonist therapies. Actemra represents the fourth IV Infusion product in the RA Market and the first infusion product with monthly maintenance dosing.
