Growth patterns in 2 months old infants help predict child's weight by age 5

Infants as young as two months old already exhibit growth patterns that can predict the child's weight by age 5, according to researchers at Case Western Reserve University's Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing and Tennessee State University.

H1N1: Bridging the knowledge gap

A commentary in the December issue of The Lancet Infectious Diseases brings to light the gaps in knowledge on the transmission of a common pathogen - the influenza virus - and its impact on decisions about how best to protect health care workers. Infectious diseases specialist Leonard Mermel, DO, medical director of infection control for Rhode Island Hospital, looks at the ongoing debate in light of the H1N1 pandemic, what past research tells us about the spread of influenza, and what is missing in the debate. Preclinical data of ANG1005 and ANG1007 for treatment of brain cancer presented at AACR 2010

Angiochem, Inc., a clinical-stage biotechnology company developing drugs that are uniquely capable of crossing the blood-brain barrier through LRP-1 targeting, announced today that preclinical data was presented on two of its oncology programs, ANG1005 and ANG1007, for the treatment of brain cancers at the 101st Annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research 2010, April 17-21, in Washington, DC.

Europe conference to discuss on new HIV indicator diseases

Today, heterosexuals in Europe are at particular risk of carrying HIV for so long that they remain undiagnosed until their immune system starts to fail and they become ill. An international study under the leadership of the HIV in Europe initiative has now revealed that a number of diseases, including herpes zoster and certain forms of cancer, should be on the list of indicators for having HIV - and thus serve to prompt health care professionals to suggest an HIV-test to their patients.

More doctors in the U.S. now focus on nursing home care, study finds

The number of doctors and advance practitioners in the United States who focus on nursing home care rose by more than a third between 2012 and 2015, according to a new study published today in JAMA from researchers at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.
