Packing the effects of exercise into a single pill for at-risk patients

Researchers from The Australian National University have identified unique molecular signals in the body that could hold the key to developing a supplement capable of administering the health benefits of exercise to patients incapable of physical activity.

Men who smoke cigarettes may experience a significant decline in their capacity to father a child

Sperm from nearly two-thirds of the chronic smokers in the study failed a special test that measures the ability of sperm to fertilize an egg. On average, those men showed a 75 percent decline in fertilizing capacity when compared to nonsmokers. Lead researcher Loni Burkman, Ph.D., presented the results today (Oct. 17, 2005) at the American Society of Reproductive Medicine annual meeting in Montreal, Quebec.

Eating at full-service restaurants not necessarily healthier than eating at fast-food outlets

When Americans go out to eat, either at a fast-food outlet or a full-service restaurant, they consume, on average, about 200 more calories a day than when they stay home for meals, a new study reports. They also take in more fat, saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium than those who prepare and eat their meals at home.

Portola, Accumetrics sign agreement to develop and supply VerifyNow System

Accumetrics, Inc., a privately-held developer and marketer of the VerifyNow System, the first rapid and easy-to-use point-of-care diagnostic system for measuring platelet reactivity to multiple antiplatelet agents, announced today that the company has signed an agreement with Portola Pharmaceuticals, Inc. to develop and supply the VerifyNow System and VerifyNowTests for use in clinical trials.

New chemotherapy gives hope to brain tumour patients

A large international study conducted by the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) in collaboration with the National Cancer Institute of Canada (NCIC) Clinical Trials Group demonstrated that the addition of a novel chemotherapy agent, Temozolomide (brand name: TemodalĀ®) to radiation therapy increases survival in patients suffering from glioblastoma, a very aggressive form of a brain tumour.
