Scientists have discovered an enzyme used in nature to make powerful chemicals from catnip to a cancer drug, vinblastine. The discovery opens up the prospect of producing these chemicals cheaply and efficiently.
To raise awareness about the health and safety challenges posed by the nation's shortage of surgeons and to show how the shortage is hitting some counties harder than others, especially in rural areas, the American College of Surgeons Health Policy Research Institute (ACS HPRI) released a new publication that maps the surgeon supply across the United States.
A group of Russian AIDS activists are charging that the Russian Ministry of Health is denying that there are drug stock-outs that prevent patients from starting or continuing treatment. "In this situation, people with HIV face a choice: to die quietly at home or try to attract the attention of the government and the media," said Alexey Yaskovich, a Russian activist from Novgorod. "Therefore, activists will continue to go to the streets of Moscow and hold public events dedicated to saving their lives."
The measure, which would keep the federal government functioning until March 18, funds most programs at their current level. It does, however, trim $4 billion by targeting certain programs — but the health law is not "de-funded" in this plan. Still, governors are uneasy about the impact likely federal spending reductions will have on their budgets.
