The Wall Street Journal: "Medical-device maker Medtronic Inc. disclosed that it made payments of more than $15.7 million in royalties and consulting fees to U.S. doctors in the first quarter, the first time the big Minneapolis company has provided such details. In making the voluntary disclosure, Medtronic is stepping ahead of requirements of a new federal law mandating such publication by 2013.
Restaurant workers - who account for 4 to 6 million of the nation's uninsured - will have new options for health coverage even before the law kicks in with new subsidies and "exchanges" in 2014, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. "Their trade group, the National Restaurant Association, was able to line up a smorgasbord of individual and small-group plans from UnitedHealth, some priced 15 to 20 percent cheaper than the open market.

Technologies (Vitex) and collaborators at the University at Buffalo's School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Buffalo, NY, today presented a detailed analysis of the Phase I/II clinical trial of its HIV drug candidate PA-457 at the 3rd International AIDS Society (IAS) Conference on HIV Pathogenesis and Treatment in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Scientists have long known that air pollution caused by cars and trucks, solvent use and even plants, is reduced when broken down by naturally occurring compounds that act like detergents of the atmosphere. What has not been well understood until now are the relative contributions of all the processes producing such compounds.
The muscle supplement creatine can be safely taken by children with neuromuscular diseases, but does not improve strength or muscle mass, according to research that will be presented at the American Academy of Neurology 56th Annual Meeting in San Francisco, Calif., April 24 – May 1, 2004.
