After a cautious and rigorous analysis of national malpractice claims, Johns Hopkins patient safety researchers estimate that a surgeon in the United States leaves a foreign object such as a sponge or a towel inside a patient's body after an operation 39 times a week, performs the wrong procedure on a patient 20 times a week and operates on the wrong body site 20 times a week.
Blood research conducted by biomedical engineers from The University of Texas at San Antonio College of Engineering, in collaboration with the Blood Research Program of the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research, could change the way injured soldiers are treated on the battlefield.
International organizations have come together to launch a new One Health High-Level Expert Panel to improve understanding of how diseases with the potential to trigger pandemics, emerge and spread.
