HHS Secretary calls for health insurance companies to publicly justify proposed premium increases

In a letter to the CEOs of UnitedHealth Group Inc., WellPoint Inc., Aetna Inc., Health Care Service Corporation and CIGNA HealthCare Inc., U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius called on the executives to publicly justify proposed health insurance premium increases. Sebelius' letter comes after a meeting last week with these executives at the White House.

Cumberland Pharmaceuticals publishes data on its Phase III intravenous ibuprofen study

Cumberland Pharmaceuticals Inc. announced today that its Phase III study on intravenous ibuprofen as a post-operative analgesic was published in Volume 31, Number 9 of the peer-reviewed journal Clinical Therapeutics, distributed in October. The study concludes that patients emerging from orthopedic and abdominal surgeries required less narcotic and experienced less pain with 800 mg of intravenous ibuprofen every six hours compared to morphine alone.

Insurers expand business overseas

The Wall Street Journal: "Cigna Corp. is expanding overseas, leading a push by health insurers to find growth amid uncertainties at home. Next month, the Philadelphia-based firm will launch an insurance policy in Spain that it says is the first of its kind to be sold by U.S. insurers. The new plan is sold directly to local individuals, as opposed to employer-sponsored or supplemental policies offered by Cigna in 26 other countries.
