The American Society for Radiation Oncology is continuing its commitment to Target Safely, a six-point patient protection plan developed in January 2010, to improve the safety and quality of radiation therapy treatments and reduce the chances of medical errors.
HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius is scheduled to address the Annual Meeting of the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO) in Vienna, Va. today. This annual meeting (Oct. 14-16), of state and territorial health officials from across the nation, will hold discussions on critical national public health issues including 2009 H1N1 virus, health reform, food safety, health equity and prevention.
A population-wide community and clinical prevention program involving 10,000 adults meaningfully reduced the cardiovascular (CV) risk profile among a substantial portion of the population as indicated by those participating in screenings. Findings also indicate the level of improvements differ by gender for specific cardiovascular risk factors.
"At present, the prevailing strategy for improving access to medicines for neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) is drug donation programs, which, despite providing some of the highest economic returns of public health programs ... have uncertain sustainability," Francesca Holt of St. John's College at the University of Cambridge and colleagues write in this PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases opinion piece.
Chronix Biomedical today reported that it has significantly expanded and accelerated its biomarker development capabilities with the installation of Germany's first state-of-the-art high-throughput DNA mass sequencer at the University of Göttingen, Chronix's long-time collaborator. Chronix is developing disease-specific biomarkers based on DNA fragments that are released into the bloodstream by damaged and dying (apoptotic) cells.
