A study published today in Nature Genetics has revealed mutations that could have a major impact on the future diagnosis and treatment of many human diseases.
For more than 40 years, physicians have treated diminished kidney function as two distinct syndromes: acute kidney injury (AKI) and chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, recent epidemiologic and mechanistic studies suggest the two syndromes are not distinct entities, but interconnected.
In people with high cholesterol levels, the fat that is built up in the artery walls narrows the arteries causing a condition called atherosclerosis. A study published on 19th June in the European Heart Journal has found the likelihood of a vaccine that can immunize humans having atherosclerosis, subsequent to successful outcomes in a mouse model study. At present, phase I clinical trial has begun in patients to see the possibility of translating the study findings to humans.
The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) will establish eleven new Collaborative Research Centres (CRC) as of 1 January 2011. This decision was made recently by the responsible Grants Committee at its autumn meeting in Bonn. The new CRCs will receive a total of - 94.4 million (including a 20 percent programme allowance for indirect project costs) for an initial funding period of four years.
