For more than a decade, researchers and advocates have marked HIV Vaccine Awareness Day with varying degrees of hope, cynicism and despair. This year, in large part because of the results of the Thai Prime-Boost vaccine study, there is greater cause for hope than ever before and a renewed sense of urgency to transform this hope into a reality.
Supporters of a proposed Connecticut health plan for poor adults say it should be implemented soon to help support state efforts to expand coverage under the federal health law in 2014. Also, a report in Wisconsin finds that the Medicaid program will run short of funds over the next year and a half.
Democratic lawmakers are "maneuvering to lower public expectations" about the prospects of health care proposals offered by Democratic presidential candidates Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton (N.Y.) and Barack Obama (Ill.) amid concerns that "sweeping change will be difficult," The Hill reports.
In research that could help in the search for an HIV vaccine, "American researchers have minutely tracked one person's powerful immune response to the virus to see how a series of mutations led to an antibody that can defeat many HIV strains," the New York Times reports (McNeil, 4/3).
