Although digital breast tomosynthesis, or 3-D mammography, costs more than a digital mammography screening, it actually may help rein in cancer screening costs, according to preliminary findings presented by researchers from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania during the 2017 San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium.
William E. Sorfleet had a life-threatening abdominal aortic aneurysm, but at age 82, he was too old for major invasive surgery to repair the bulging blood vessel. So vascular surgeon Dr. Ross Milner of Loyola University Hospital repaired the aneurysm with a catheter device instead of a scalpel. The catheter, inserted through an artery, deployed a device called a stent graft that repaired the aneurysm.
Over the past few years, scientists have discovered that a new class of genetic regulators called "microRNAs" influences normal human growth and development. Now, researchers have found that microRNAs also play an important role in human cancer. The findings are published in today's issue of the journal Nature (June 9).
An outbreak of a novel Escherichia coli (E. coli) strain resistant to antibiotics has been linked to contaminated endoscopes in a Washington state hospital. The study indicates that industry standard cleaning guidelines, which were exceeded by hospital staff, may not be sufficient for sterilizing endoscopes adequately.
