Research holds promise for developing treatments for retinitis pigmentos

One of the leading causes of inherited blindness in humans, retinitis pigmentosa, is analogous to retinal dystrophies that lead to blindness in dogs. Because of their similarities, identifying gene mutations underlying several types of canine retinal dystrophies has suggested courses for research on RP in humans. These advances are significant for both humans and dogs.

Without individual mandate, does health law unravel?

Of all the complaints that have been made about the new federal health care law, the angriest have been against the law's "individual mandate," which requires everyone who can afford health insurance to purchase it or pay a fine.

Morphine inhibits BDNF protein, whereas cocaine enhances BDNF

Chronic morphine exposure has the opposite effect on the brain compared to cocaine in mice, providing new insight into the basis of opiate addiction, according to Mount Sinai School of Medicine researchers. They found that a protein called brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which is increased in cocaine addiction, is inhibited in opioid addiction. The research is published in the October 5 issue of Science.
