Favorable results from BioCryst's ulodesine plus allopurinol Phase 2b trial on gout

BioCryst Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announced favorable 52-week safety results and sustained efficacy from the extension phase of its randomized Phase 2b trial of ulodesine (BCX4208) added to allopurinol in patients with gout who had failed to reach the serum uric acid (sUA) therapeutic goal of <6 mg/dL on allopurinol alone, as well as positive Phase 2 safety results in patients with mild to moderate renal impairment.

Data shows that most bingers are not alone in drinking

New research strongly suggests that binge drinking often occurs in settings that dramatically increase the risk of injury to bingers and others, a disturbing finding considering that binge drinking accounts for approximately half of the 75,000 alcohol-attributable deaths in the United States every year and opens the door to a host of dangerous risk behaviors.

Home genetic tests need medical supervision: Expert panel

According to an advisory panel to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, genetic tests sold directly to consumers that might help to predict health risks may need to be supplied through doctors. An official, Alberto Gutierrez, director of the FDA office that regulates diagnostic screening tools reported that the Molecular and Clinical Genetics Advisory Panel concluded two days of hearings on the increasingly popular tests and had come to this resolution.
